Every year gray whales migrate more than 10,000 miles between their summer feeding grounds in the Arctic and the coastal lagoons of the southern Baja peninsula. Laguna San Ignacio in Baja California Sur, Mexico is one of 3 lagoons on the southwest coast of Baja that are the winter home of the gray whale. The whales use these protected, shallow, warm waters as calving nurseries.

Your adventure begins with a seamless journey from city to sea.
Your Baja Discovery adventure begins at San Diego’s Old Town, where our staff will greet you, check you in, and provide your luggage tags before boarding the bus for the short ride to the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) facility. After clearing Mexican Immigration and Customs, followed by Tijuana Airport security, there is usually time to browse the airport shops, enjoy a coffee, or grab a bite to eat while we wait for the northbound charter planes carrying the returning group. Your southbound flight to San Ignacio Lagoon is approximately two hours, offering sweeping views of Baja’s majestic mountains, desert landscapes, and spectacular coastline.
Upon landing at the lagoon’s dirt airstrip, you’ll step off the plane into the fresh ocean breeze and may hear the calls of a nearby osprey. After a short minibus ride to the Kuyimita campsite, you’ll change into your water-friendly clothes and shoes before a 20-minute boat ride to our camp at Punta Piedra. Upon arrival, our camp staff will greet you with smiles, help unload the luggage by forming a lively “conga line” up the rocks, and then you’ll get settled into your tent. Dinner is served after sunset, followed by camp orientation.

First Encounters with the Gray Whales
Your first full day brings unforgettable introductions to the lagoon’s gentle giants.
After breakfast you’ll board the pangas with experienced local boatmen and naturalists for your first trip out among the gray whales. Be on the lookout for breaches & spy-hops, and playful babies interacting with their attentive mothers, who will hopefully swim over to say hello!
Between whale-watching trips, spend your free hours however you like: walk the shoreline, photograph the mangroves, play volleyball, or simply relax in a camp chair watching whales surface offshore. Depending on tides, you might join a guided kayak or birding trip into the mangroves. As the day fades, gather for happy hour on the point, where the Santa Clara Mountains turn pink in the setting sun, followed by dinner and a naturalist presentation beneath the stars.

Immerse yourself in the rhythm of camp and the wonders of the lagoon.
By now, camp life feels like second nature. The lagoon is alive from dawn to dusk — whales breaching offshore, ospreys circling above, and dolphins occasionally racing the pangas. You’ll continue with two whale-watching outings, where you’ll hopefully encounter playful calves and their mothers as they swim over to investigate our boats.
Afternoons are relaxed — lunch followed by a siesta, reading in your tent’s shade, or a conversation over coffee in the dining tent. As the sun drops, gather for another happy hour at the point, where the colors of the desert and sea blend in the evening light. Dinner is followed by another informal talk or simply quiet time under the stars.

The evening culminates with a farewell dinner celebration featuring fresh oysters from Verde Mar, harvested nearby and prepared by our camp staff. Farewell to San Ignacio Lagoon
A final morning of gratitude before your return flight north.
The final day begins with breakfast and a few last moments to watch whales surfacing in the distance. After heartfelt goodbyes to the camp staff, you’ll board pangas back to Kuyimita, change into travel clothes, and continue by mini-bus to the airstrip. The northbound flight offers spectacular views of the lagoon, desert, and coastline — a fitting finale to your Baja adventure.
Upon landing in Tijuana, you’ll pass smoothly through CBX and U.S. Customs before boarding the charter bus for the short drive back to San Diego’s Old Town. You’ll arrive mid-afternoon, carrying sand on your shoes and memories that last a lifetime.

Each day includes two whale-watching excursions led by expert guides and boat captains the locals call “pangeros”. Between outings, guests can walk the beach, kayak through mangroves, read, or simply relax in camp. Evenings feature sunset happy hours, communal meals, and casual naturalist presentations.
Encounters are always on the whales’ terms. Many approach the boats voluntarily, often coming within arm’s reach—but touching is never guaranteed and always up to the whales.
From early February through late March offers the highest concentrations of whales, including mothers with calves and active mating behavior.
